Bruno Fernandes has joined an elite list of Premier League legendary playmakers after equalling the record for the most assists in a single season.

The Manchester United captain registered his 20th assist of the 2025-26 campaign during United’s dramatic 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest over the weekend, drawing level with Thierry Henry (2002-03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019-20), who previously shared the record.

Fernandes now heads into the final round of matches with the chance to become the outright holder of the record, sparking debate over who is the greatest playmaker in Premier League history.

1. Bruno Fernandes — 20 assists (2025-26)

The Portuguese midfielder has been at the centre of Manchester United’s attacking resurgence this season, consistently delivering goalscoring opportunities for teammates with his creativity, vision, passing range, and movement.

Fernandes equalled the record after providing an assist against Nottingham Forest and could still break it outright before the season concludes with the final day matchup against Brighton and Hove Albion. If he repeats this season’s record-equalling tally of 20 assists in 2026/27, he could enter the top 10 for the most assists in Premier League history.

He currently has a total of 71, which puts him joint-17th in the all-time chart with former Spurs captain Son Heung-min.

2. Kevin De Bruyne — 20 assists (2019-20); 18 assists (2016-17)

De Bruyne matched Thierry Henry’s long-standing record during Manchester City’s 2019-20 campaign under Pep Guardiola.

The Belgian midfielder produced one of the finest creative seasons in Premier League history, dominating games with his passing accuracy, crossing and chance creation.

His return of 18 assists in 2016/17 during Pep Guardiola’s first season at Manchester City is also worthy of note.

3. Thierry Henry — 20 assists (2002-03)

Arsenal legend Henry became the first player to record 20 assists in a single Premier League season, although the Gunners lost the title to Manchester United.

Remarkably, the Frenchman also scored 24 league goals during the same campaign, underlining his reputation as one of the greatest all-round forwards the league has ever seen.

Henry is regarded as one of the greatest individual seasons in Premier League history.

4. Mesut Özil — 19 assists (2015-16)

Özil came within touching distance of breaking the record outright during Arsenal’s 2015-16 season, with 16 of the overall 19 assists earned in just 18 games.

The German playmaker looked certain to surpass Henry’s tally with his impressive form at that time but eventually finished with 19 assists after Arsenal’s form dipped in the latter part of the 2015-2016 campaign.

5. Mohamed Salah — 18 assists (2024-25)

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah added another historic achievement to his Premier League career by recording 18 assists during the 2024-25 season, while scoring 27 goals.

Salah was the central attacking figure for Liverpool as he led them to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight championship in Arne Slot’s debut season in charge.

6. Cesc Fabregas — 18 assists (2014-15); 17 assists (2007-08)

Fabregas played a crucial role in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign in 2014-15, with his tally of 18 assists instrumental to Jose Mourinho’s side.

The Spaniard controlled games with his intelligence and passing quality, forming one of the most effective midfield partnerships in the league that season.

Additionally, Fabregas also recorded 17 assists for Arsenal in the 2007-08 season.

7. Frank Lampard — 18 assists (2004-05)

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard remains one of the highest-scoring and most creative midfielders in Premier League history.

His 18 assists were instrumental in helping Chelsea win the league title under José Mourinho during the 2004-05 season.

He also scored 17 goals that season to cement his reputation as one of his generation’s finest midfielders, finishing second behind Ronaldinho in the Ballon d’Or voting.
