FG TO REFORMS NYSC, REPLACES MILITARY LEADERSHIP, REDESIGNS UNIFORM

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major restructuring of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande. Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting at the Presidential Villa, on Monday, the Minister said will include a full review of the Scheme.

The Minister, however, said after many years, a reform has been imperative, adding that “our needs as a country have changed and many expect the objectives of NYSC to also change.”

A key component of the reform is the leadership structure of the scheme, as the NYSC will now be headed by a civilian, while the military will continue to provide security support for corps members across the country.

The Federal Government said the overhaul is part of efforts to transform the scheme into a productivity-driven institution that equips young Nigerians with relevant skills and supports broader economic goals.
