What truly sets Chief Mike Adenuga apart?

Nigeria has no shortage of wealthy men. Fortune and fame are not rare in our landscape of success stories. Yet, year after year, when his birthday comes around, the outpouring of love for Chief Mike Adenuga feels different, deeper, warmer, more personal.

It is not his wealth that people celebrate. If you read the tributes, you’ll notice something striking: his riches are hardly the focus. Instead, people speak of kindness. Of lives touched. Of doors opened. Of hope restored.

Yes, he is admired for his towering achievements in business. But he is loved for something far greater—his humanity.

I know this not from a distance, but from experience.

Our paths first crossed during his passionate support for Nigerian football. He didn’t just sponsor the league; he believed in it. He invested in our national teams, including the Super Eagles, with a vision to see Nigeria compete with the very best. His influence was part of the golden era that saw Enyimba F.C. conquer Africa, winning the CAF Champions League in 2003 and 2004. It is still a proud, unmatched feat for a Nigerian club.

In recognition of his impact, he was honoured with the title:  Enyi of Africa, the Elephant of Africa. In Igbo culture, the elephant symbolises strength, dignity, and quiet power. It could not have been more fitting.

But titles and achievements only tell part of the story.

In 2010, as I prepared to travel to India for medical treatment, something remarkable happened. Without being asked, Chief Adenuga stepped in. He supported me financially and also stood by me emotionally.

Every single week during my two-month stay in Delhi, he asked:

“How is the treatment going?”

Not out of obligation. Not for show. But out of genuine care.

Then one day, he said something I will never forget:

“If you need more money, just know that I’m a phone call away.”

I was stunned.

How many people, no matter their wealth, extend that kind of open-hearted generosity?

To this day, my prayer remains the same as it was then:

May God continue to bless him, grant him good health, and guide him always.

And I am far from alone.

Across Nigeria, from the streets to the studios, from athletes to actors, from rising talents to established stars, his impact echoes. Through Globacom, he has empowered countless individuals in sports, music, and Nollywood, quietly lifting others.

What makes him different is simple, yet rare:

He does not just have wealth, he has heart.

Not every rich man remembers the poor. Not every powerful man lifts others. But Mike Adenuga does. Consistently. Quietly. Meaningfully.

That is why he is celebrated.

That is why he is cherished.

That is why he stands apart.

Sir, as you mark another year, may your days be long, your strength renewed, and your legacy ever brighter.

Happy Birthday, Enyi 1 of Africa.
