CONCERNED NEWLY RECRUITED CIVIL/PUBLIC SERVANTS REJECT SELECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CONTRIBUTORY PENSION SCHEME IN OYO STATE

We, the Concerned Newly Recruited Civil and Public Servants of Oyo State employed from January 2025, strongly reject the decision of the Oyo State Government to exclusively implement the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) for our category of workers while retaining the Defined Benefits Scheme for other serving officers.

This policy is discriminatory in application, inequitable in principle, and unjust in its consequences.

While we recognize the authority of government to introduce reforms aimed at improving public administration, we are deeply concerned that a policy with far-reaching implications on the future and retirement security of workers is being imposed solely on a particular group of employees without extending the same conditions to the rest of the workforce.

The government has repeatedly described the CPS as a superior, transparent, and sustainable pension arrangement. If this assertion is indeed correct, then fairness demands that the scheme be implemented uniformly across the public service rather than being restricted to newly recruited workers alone.

It is difficult to understand why two categories of workers employed by the same government, performing the same duties, serving under the same conditions, and contributing equally to the development of Oyo State should be subjected to different pension structures solely because of their dates of employment.

We respectfully submit that this selective implementation creates a clear inequality within the service and establishes an unfair distinction between workers who should ordinarily enjoy equal treatment under the same employer.

We therefore reject the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme for workers recruited from January 2025 and call on the Oyo State Government to immediately suspend its implementation pending broader consultations with affected workers, labour representatives, and other critical stakeholders.

Furthermore, we appeal to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, to demonstrate his well-known commitment to justice, fairness, and workers’ welfare by allowing newly recruited civil and public servants to enjoy the same pension arrangement currently applicable to existing officers in the service.

Our position is not driven by confrontation but by a sincere demand for equity and equal treatment. We believe that no worker should be disadvantaged simply because of the year in which he or she was employed.

We remain committed to the progress of Oyo State and the efficient delivery of public service. However, we strongly maintain that the selective implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme is unacceptable and should be reconsidered in the interest of fairness, industrial harmony, and social justice.
